The recipes in The Festive Food of Italy range from simple sweets and side dishes, to substantial main courses.
The Food: Christmas Day C hristmas in the Italian family is probably the most joyous holiday. In the Italian Catholic tradition, Christmas Eve is a day of abstinence from meat so a celebratory banquet frequently features fish - some families even prepare as many as 20 different fish dishes!
Try this recipe for an ice cream dessert, an alternative to Christmas pudding.
Italian festive food varies from region to region, although there are some common dishes.
Naturally traditions have changed, but many have kept this tradition, and, in fact, as midnight brings Christmas day, that is when you would start cooking the sausage for Christmas Dinner, and often the eating would go on until the late/early morning hours. This past Christmas Eve, my family decided to take a break and have someone else do the cooking, so we went out to a small, family-owned restaurant in an exclusive area.
Of course, there was also a small amount of homemade wine on hand.
